More on the Mobilis

Charukesi May 13th, 2005

Dheepak has written a rather long and informative comment on my earlier post - the ‘affordable’ computer dream - rather than reproduce it here, I thought it would be better to leave it there and urge you to read it as a comment - and also leave your thoughts on it please. ICT4d is an area of personal interest for me - although I am largely tech-handicapped….

While on this, I remember Microsoft had launched Office (?) with a Tamil interface recently - all I remember is Maran’s beaming face on all TV channels… any idea what is happening to that?

Charu, Its a nice topic but you caught the wrong end of the stick. Maran was obviously delighted at that ceremony. It wasnt MS Office which was making the headlines. Instead it was the collection of Tamil version of several open source software which were packaged and distributed free in CDs. Millions of free CDs were handed over to libraries, schools, govt institutions etc.

Also check out the Tamil version of free/GNU open office software which has most of the functionalities of MS office. Dont forget that even after 30% discount, legal copy of MS office is unaffordable to most Home as well as SOHO users.

Though this was a relatively shorter comment, I guess I triggered your spam filters again.

Dheepak, my spam filter hates you for some reason - sorry :) let me read your latest comments - will respond here soon… anyways, when I said Maran was delighted, I meant he looked happy to be seen with his great grand uncle or whoever MuKa is… what was MuKa doing at the ceremony in any case?!
