The Invisible Heating That Made My Gas Bill Disappear
I removed my last radiator three years ago. I didn’t replace it with another radiator. I put a white plate on the ceiling that my guests don’t even notice until they realize they are walking barefoot in January and their feet are warm. That plate is an infrared panel. And it changed how I understand what warm actually means.

Warm Is Not Hot Air. Warm Is Warm Surfaces.
For 100 years heating companies taught us that warm means 23 degrees of air. So we bought bigger boilers, hotter radiators, we burned more gas to make air hotter. And we still felt cold, because our bodies don’t feel air. They feel surfaces.
Stand in a tent at 20 degrees air temperature at night under a clear sky and you will freeze, because the cold sky sucks your body heat out with radiation. Stand in a stone house at 19 degrees air temperature but with walls at 23 degrees and you will feel perfectly warm, because warm walls give you heat back.
A radiator can never give you warm walls. It gives you hot air at the ceiling and cold walls everywhere else. The corner behind your wardrobe stays at 14 degrees all winter. That is where water condenses, that is where black mold is born, that is where you smell that old musty house smell.
A 700W ceiling infrared panel reverses it. It shines invisible infrared rays down like sunshine. In 15 minutes your floor is no longer ice, it is 23 degrees. In 30 minutes your four walls are 22 degrees. Now you live inside a warm cave. Air can be 20 degrees and you feel warmer than at 24 degrees with radiators, because every surface around you is radiating warmth to you. Your feet are warm. Your bed is warm before you get in. Your towels in the bathroom are warm.
How To Heat Only The Room You Use
With gas you have one brain for the whole house. One boiler must heat everything or nothing.
With infrared each room is its own house. One panel, one WiFi thermostat with a sensor on your desk, one program in the app.
My reality: Living room 21 degrees from 17:00 to 23:00 only. Bedroom 19 degrees for sleeping, but 22 degrees for 20 minutes before I wake up so the floor is warm when I step out of bed. Office 21 degrees Monday to Friday 9-5. Guest room 15.5 degrees all winter on anti-mold mode. It costs me 6 cents a day to keep that guest room dry and mold-free, instead of heating it for nothing.
When I leave for my weekend house on the coast, I open the app one hour before arrival and turn on bathroom and living room. There is no water inside the panels, so I can leave the house completely off at minus 10 degrees for two months and nothing will freeze, burst or flood. Try that with gas.
The Math No One Shows You
14 sqm bedroom, 700W ceiling panel. Without thermostat, running 8 hours: 5.6 kWh x 0.25 EUR = 1.40 EUR per day. With smart WiFi thermostat pulsing 20 minutes per hour to keep walls warm: effective work 2.5 hours per day, 1.75 kWh x 0.25 = 0.44 EUR per day. 180 days of winter: 79 EUR for that room for the whole winter. No boiler service, no gas connection fee of 12 EUR per month even when you don’t heat, no radiator valves, no risk.
The panel is 2 cm thick, 7 kilos, silent, no maintenance, lasts 25 years. As white board, as black glass, as mirror that never fogs in the bathroom, as your family photo printed on it. I don’t heat air anymore. I heat the floor my daughter plays on, the walls that were always cold, the bed I sleep in. The air just stays fresh, calm and healthy at 50% humidity with no dust flying around. Once you live with warm walls, you will never understand how you ever lived with hot air.
